In a statement released on Thursday, October 2, 2025, the Alliance Fleuve Congo;(AFC/M23) alerted the national and international community to what it described as a “deliberate massacre” perpetrated by loyalist forces against civilian populations in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to the movement led by Corneille Nangaa and Bertrand Bisimwa, aerial bombardments involving drones and fighter jets targeted densely populated areas in the territories of Rutshuru and Lubero on the night of Wednesday, October 1 to Thursday, October 2. These attacks reportedly caused the deaths of many civilians and led to the mass displacement of the local population.
The AFC/M23 accuses the Kinshasa regime of conducting these operations from bases established in Uvira (South Kivu) and Bujumbura, the capital of neighboring Burundi. The movement considers these actions to be “war crimes” and says it is now obliged to intervene to, in its words, “protect and save innocent lives in the face of this barbarity.”
The statement calls on international human rights organizations and the United Nations to investigate these events and take urgent action to end this cycle of violence.
This statement comes at a time when the security situation remains explosive in the eastern provinces, despite ongoing regional peace initiatives.
