Militiamen from Mobondo carried out an attack on Friday, November 7, in Kingangati, a peripheral grouping located in the Maluku municipality of Kinshasa. According to local authorities, the attack, which occurred in the evening, resulted in at least five deaths. The victims were “police officers who were killed by the militiamen,” said Alexis Mampa Mundoni, the mayor of Maluku.
The municipal authority noted that the intervention of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) helped to drive the attackers away, who had looted several properties of the local population in the village of Kingunu. The mayor announced an on-site visit to assess the situation firsthand.
The army claims to have rendered “these assailants, who were armed with firearms and machetes, incapable of causing further harm.” The FARDC added that many residents of the village of Kisha and surrounding areas fled their homes to seek refuge in various neighborhoods of Kinshasa.
The spokesperson for Operation Ngemba stated that “the situation is relatively calm, but units of the 14th military region are currently continuing search operations in the area to ensure a complete return to security.” Captain Anthony Mualushayi promised to provide a detailed report on the FARDC’s intervention following the ongoing operations.
The attack caused widespread panic in Kingakati throughout Friday evening due to the loud explosions of gunfire heard.
In response to these security incidents, the N’sele Valley Park, owned by former President Joseph Kabila in Kingakati, announced on Friday evening its closure to tourist activities on Saturday and Sunday. A precarious calm prevailed in Kingakati on Saturday.
